Downloading and using different Mac OS installers is very common for troubleshooting purposes, for IT staff and admins, and for tinkerers. This article will discuss where to download and access installers for macOS Ventura 13, MacOS Monterey 12, macOS Big Sur 11, macOS Catalina, MacOS Mojave, MacOS High Sierra, macOS Sierra, Mac OS X El Capitan, OS X Yosemite, OS X Mavericks, Mac OS X Mountain Lion, Mac OS X Lion, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Leopard, Mac OS X Tiger, and others too.
Another option is to peruse the Apple Vintage Software collection at Archive.org which may have image files of older system restore disks and other older system software, just beware that archive.org is not an official distributor of Apple software so appropriate precautions should be taken and only download from there at your own risk.

Apple made Mac OS X Lion and Mac OS X Mountain Lion available for download for free here in the summer of 2021. This is the first time either version of the software was available for free. All versions of the operating system released after these cat-themed releases were delivered for free to users of Apple products.
Starting with Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks, Apple started making updates to their operating system free for compatible devices. You can still buy Mac OS X lion and Mac OS X Mountain Lion from the Apple store for approximately $20 each, but they've also been made available for free through Apple support documents.
If you're looking to download Mac OS X Mountain Lion, you'll need at least OS X Snow Leopard, Lion 10.7, or Mountain Lion 10.8. You'll also need 2GB memory, and 8GB data storage. If you're looking to download Mac OS X Lion, you'll need OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or OS X Lion 10.7 (weird, right?) already installed. You'll also need 7GB data space and 2GB memory on your machine.
These downloads will more than likely be used by IT specialists aiming to recover data from older Apple computers. While some of the oldest viable Apple hardware may still have recoverable data, software used to recover said data isn't always compatible with the operating systems on the devices that'll be the target of said software. This free pathway to updates makes the whole process a whole lot simpler.
I'm currently running Mountain Lion, but I'd like to redownload Lion (to create a bootable install drive). However, when I click the download button in the App Store, I receive a message telling me my current OS X is newer and the download will not start.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to download OS X Lion 10.7 from a computer currently running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 unless you want to do a little hacking see below for more on that.
I would like to be proved wrong, but the results around the web such as Apple Support Communities - How do I download Lion if I'm running Mountain Lion? kind of confim you can no longer just download 10.7 from a Mac running 10.8.
Confirming, you will need to download the "OS X Lion" Installer from a computer not running Mountain Lion. This limits downloading OS X Lion to a Mac running OS X Lion 10.7, or OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later. Once you meet the requirements for OS X Lion the Mac App Store will allow you to download an already purchased version of OS X Lion.
Ignore the message from the Lion Installer that runs on OS X Mountain Lion after the Lion installer has finished downloading as pictured below. Note: This is what you will see if you attempt to run the Lion Installer from Mountain Lion.
Option clicking should work so long as you purchased Lion previously from the app store and you're using the same Apple ID to download now. Hold the option key and click the purchases tab as shown here.
Game Center is the same as on iOS. Gaming is becoming increasingly important on OS X and Game Center allows you to download games, play against friends and save your progress. AirPlay will allow Mac and iOS users to play against one another. You can also share your scores on Facebook, Twitter, Mail, or Messages in OS X Mountain Lion. Additional integration with Facebook includes being able to "like" individual games and challenge friends to beat your high scores.
Released in 2011 and 2012, Mac OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion were the last paid software updates for the Mac. Ten years ago, users needed to pay Apple $19.99 for the latest version of its OS X, and now you can finally download these two for free.
Apple stopped charging for Mac OS X with the release of version 10.9 Mavericks, but users looking for older versions had to pay for the download codes via the Mac App Store. Both Mac OS X Lion and Mac OS X Mountain Lion are still available for purchase for $19.99 each.
Apple has made sure to take in the views and considerations of the Beta version users and the tweaks made through this update are a strong testimony to it. The environment is fabricated with a much easier user experience to tackle all the problems efficiently and smoothly. The Wi-fi performance is also tweaked up to give you seamless connectivity and improved upload and download speeds.
There are also improved security enhancements with this update. Apple has been a company that always believes in keeping the security details and the privacy of its customers and has maintained the same till date. Well the Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 is the dawn update for MacBook users especially. Apple focused on decoding and solving the bugs that erupted among the various MacBook users with the Beta version release of the Mac OS X Mountain lion. The Mountain Lion OS also improved the user interface of the MacBook interface.
This wouldn't be an Apple product without a bit of a twist: Mountain Lion is a digital download and can only be purchased through the Mac App Store, which can be found under the Apple menu. The upgrade is not available on disc or on a USB stick. So if you don't have broadband, you're going to have to find a Wi-Fi hotspot to download the 4.3GB update.
If you're strapped for bandwidth and you have multiple Macs, make sure to keep a copy of the installer before you install Mountain Lion. The installer deletes itself from your Applications folder once it's done, though you can download it again later through the App Store if you need to. Once you make a copy, you can transfer it wirelessly to other Macs in your household and install away.
It took about 35 minutes to install Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro (which has an SSD drive) after I had downloaded the installer. The entire installation was as easy as can be; once you agree to the necessary terms and select your destination disk, the entire process is automatic.
OS X Mountain Lion (version 10.8) is the ninth major release of macOS, Apple Inc.'s desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers. OS X Mountain Lion was released on July 25, 2012, for purchase and download through Apple's Mac App Store, as part of a switch to releasing OS X versions online and every year, rather than every two years or so. Named to signify its status as a refinement of the previous OS X version, Lion, Apple's stated aims in developing Mountain Lion were to allow users to more easily manage and synchronise content between multiple Apple devices and to make the operating system more familiar.
The operating system gained the new malware-blocking system Gatekeeper and integration with Apple's online Game Center and iCloud services, while the Safari web browser was updated to version 6. As on iOS, Notes and Reminders became full applications, separate from Mail and Calendar, while the iChat application was replaced with a version of iOS's Messages. Mountain Lion also added a version of iOS's Notification Center, which groups updates from different applications in one place. Integrated links allowing the user to rapidly transfer content to Twitter were present in the operating system from launch. Facebook integration was also planned but unfinished at launch date. It was released as a downloadable update later. 350c69d7ab
